i just happened to cross paths with an anti-hetalia group, despite the fact i am more into homestuck now, i still love hetalia a lot, heck it was the first anime my close friend introduced to me ((and after much persuasion i watched it)).
when i first saw the group, i thought "oh this seems normal, just like how so many people hate twilight", but then i scrolled through the entries and there were really hateful comments, some even target hetalia fans, saying they are insane/stupid for like the anime/comic, that's not even fair, why are you dissing someone for liking something? just because you don't like what they do? they argued that hetalia made wars and killing seem like a joke but let me restate this: if you read hetalia, you will know hetalia is under seinen manga, which means adult male. Hetalia is an adult manga so the TARGET AUDIENCE was people who already have a brief understanding of what happened, who are mature enough to understand war isn't cutesy or funny. Also, since when did anyone make a joke of the war? i have never come across an aph fan art which made fun of the war or the holocaust or whatever. most fan arts of war/conflict are solemn and depressing. just because the anime seems funny and cutesy doesn't mean every fucking aspect of it is, if you're a fan, you'll probably have heard of America's storage room cleaning arc, which is described as one of the more "depressing" series of episodes.
oh and this is countries we are talking about, so the mangaka obviously has to watch what he draws/writes, he can't write stuff like "Germans exterminated the jews they are bad people so very bad monsters, much horror", no he can't, he has to make sure he doens't offend any of the countries, hence he plays on light humor instead, he wanted to give quick bites of fact in a fun way, he wanted to make the events and characters memorable, each country unique and different in its own way, since we are talking about a country, no he can't take into account EVERYONE in the country so he works on stereotypes. also, there is no yaoi inside, no sex scenes or anything it's just that the fans ship the characters and considering most of the countries are guys, obviously there would be more gay ships, what, are you going to hate on someone because they ship something? because they like something you don't? really?
oh and btw, eventhough i am not into every fandom, i don't shame it online, when i tease my friend about liking something i mean it as a joke. Eventhough i don't like twilight i don't go on stephanie meyer's page and write "twilight sucks you noob", no control yourselves people, i don't see the reason to have a hate group/page for anything, imagine if you were the writer and people started making hate groups about your hardwork, how would you like it?
